Product detailed description

Polyurethane Langstroth Beehive by Flugo for 10 Frames – Medium 2/3 Frame Size
The Langstroth beehive by Flugo is designed for 10 frames with a Medium 2/3 frame size (159 mm, 6 1/4″) and crafted from high-quality polyurethane. This material offers excellent thermal insulation and durability. The 3.5 cm (1.38″) thick walls provide insulation equivalent to 30 cm (11.81″) of wood, ensuring optimal conditions for bees.

Components and Features of the Beehive:

  • Hive Cover:
Includes four ventilation openings with trapezoidal closures.

    • Internal height: 6.7 cm (2.64″), providing enough space for winter feeding or supplemental feeding.
    • Dimensions and weight: 10.1 x 47.2 x 47.2 cm (3.98 x 18.58 x 18.58″); weight: 1.3 kg (2.87 lbs).
  • Hive Box:
A monolithic structure made from a single piece of polyurethane, ensuring superior strength.

    • Divider compatibility:
      • 1 divider: Splits the box into two compartments (5 + 5 frames).
    • Dimensions and weight: 19.4 x 46.4 x 54.2 cm (7.64 x 18.27 x 21.34″); weight: 1.5 kg (3.31 lbs).
    • Frame Size: Langstroth - Medium 2/3 – 159 mm (6 1/4″).
  • Varroa Bottom Board:
Features a mesh floor made of stainless steel or aluminum expanded metal with 3.15 mm (0.12″) holes and a removable plastic tray for Varroa mite monitoring.

    • Dimensions and weight: 12.2 x 47.2 x 49.4 cm (4.8 x 18.58 x 19.45″); weight: 1.4 kg (3.09 lbs).

Key Advantages of Flugo Hives:

  • Lightweight and Portable: Hive box weighs only 1.5 kg (3.31 lbs), making transport and handling easy.
  • Faster Spring Development: Excellent insulation supports rapid spring colony growth.
  • Reduced Winter Consumption: Saves up to 50% on winter food supplies, reducing costs.
  • Exceptional Thermal Insulation: 3.5 cm (1.38″) polyurethane walls offer insulation equivalent to 30 cm (11.81″) of wood.
  • Seamless Construction: Improves hive stability.
  • Langstroth Compatibility: Fully compatible with standard wooden Langstroth hives for 10 frames. Verify dimensions before purchase.
  • Easy Maintenance: Smooth surfaces simplify cleaning and reduce disease risks.
  • Optimal Year-Round Conditions: Maintains stable temperatures for honey production in summer and reduces bee mortality in winter.
  • Pest Resistance: Protects against rodents and insects, extending the hive's lifespan.
  • Durable Rebates: Allow easy movement and rearrangement of hive components.
  • Weather Resistance: Withstands rain, snow, wind, and hail.
  • Climate Adaptability: Performs well in any weather conditions.

Usage Recommendations:

  • To split the hive into two compartments, close the main entrance, insert a divider, and open the rear trapezoidal closures to create separate flight entrances for each compartment.
  • Close the bottom ventilation with the plastic tray from February 1 to March 30 to support colony development during late winter.
  • Keep bottom ventilation fully open for the rest of the year, even in severe frost.
  • On hot summer days (above 30°C), use ventilated closures on the hive cover and place a vapor-permeable sheet or propolis mesh for improved airflow.
  • For Varroa mite monitoring, keep the plastic tray slightly open (around 5 cm) to ensure adequate ventilation.

Painting Instructions:
Polyurethane is not UV-resistant. Apply a protective coating after 1–2 years of sun exposure. Lightly sand the surface before painting to ensure better adhesion. A properly applied coating can last up to 10 years.

Potential Disadvantages:
Unpainted hives may peel over time and have a shorter lifespan. Minor air bubbles or imperfections from manufacturing do not affect the hive's functionality and are not considered defects.
